If you've ever been in a car and in need of a way to plug in a traditional, two-prong AC plug for any reason or at a campsite and wishing for a way to turn on a radio for a few minutes, then you may want to look into what power inverters can do for you. Power inverters connect to a battery like those in your car or boat and transfer the power into AC power that you can use to power up electronic devices. Most of them include one or more outlets just like those in the walls of your home, and many of today's Tripp Lite inverters include USB ports so that you can charge up MP3 players, tablets, and digital cameras.

To understand power inverters you need to first understand power. There are two types of power – alternating current and direct current. The first, also called AC, uses an energy current that changes direction from time to time while the second, or DC, contains a constant direction. Batteries use DC, but since AC is less expensive to create it is what is found in your home and what almost any device runs on. For that reason, you need to utilize Tripp Lite inverters to change the current type into something that your devices can use.

Tripp Lite inverters will use one of two types of sine waves, depending on the model. Pure sine wave power inverters create the most consistent signal possible and will be able to operate any device plugged into them. Modified sine wave power inverters are less expensive but create a less constant current that some devices can not handle. Certain items simply will not run on modified sine waves, some will run less efficiently, and some will actually become damaged. Most common items will be fine on modified sine wave power inverters, however.

Wattage is another thing to understand about all power inverters, and a fairly simple one to assist. Basically, you need to add up the required amps of everything that will be connected to your Tripp Lite inverters at one time and multiply the total by 120. The result will be the number of amps that you need to look for when deciding among the different power inverters available for purchase. These are the basics of inverters. While special features like overload protection, LED monitors, and cooling fans are important as well, they're almost standard features at this point.
